July/August INCLEAN 2017
Focuses: • Human Resources • Education
Human resources is a critical and constant issue for both property owner/
managers, manufacturers and distributors, in the pursuit to recruit and retain
valuable staff, keep up to date with the growing technology of today’s industry
and deliver quality services with beneficial outcomes. INCLEAN looks specifically
at the HR issue of recruitment and how good staff can impact a business’ growth.
Ever-present is the need for further education and training for companies to
compete in the market and to strengthen the industry as a whole. INCLEAN
explores the platforms used to offer more comprehensive education programs.

It’s show time!
As we go to print on this bumper edition of INCLEAN magazine,
we along with many others are preparing for the highly
anticipated ISSA Cleaning & Hygiene Expo.
Finally bringing together the industry under one roof, the ISSA
Cleaning & Hygiene Expo is set to be the industry’s biggest
trade event yet having sold out for a second time after being
expanded due to demand. There’s also a great lineup of local
and international speakers, education programs and networking
sessions to attend to give you the right tools and know-how to build your business. For
the complete show directory turn to page 49.
In this issue we look at two major areas within the commercial cleaning industry –
healthcare and hygiene. INCLEAN’s Lizzie Hunter was on the ground at Interclean’s
Future Disinfectant Now conference in Sydney, where leaders from around the world
came together to share insights on current trends and issues in healthcare.
Among the highlights was a presentation by US-based Fiona Nemetz of Northside
Hospital in Atlanta, who spoke of how she convinced the hospital’s management team to
change the cleaning staff’s uniforms to that of the hospital staff.
Interestingly, in doing this, which she admits wasn’t without its complaints, it managed
to change how the hospital cleaners, which Nemetz’s refers to as environmental service
technicians, were viewed within the hospital by other staff and patients.
Staying on the topic of perception– is it possible for people to think themselves sick?
In this issue Kaivac’s Michael Perazzo looks at a US white paper that found a clear
correlation between perceptions of cleanliness and patient outcomes. This article can be
found on page 32.
Another hot topic of conversation within the industry continues to be in the tech space
around robot cleaners. Shopping centre operator Vicinity Centres recently deployed
a robot cleaner for night cleaning at Homebush DFO. We asked a robotics expert his
thoughts on the topic and what it could mean for the traditional workforce on page 86.
Finally, a big thanks to the teams at INCLEAN, Interpoint Events and ISSA who have
all been working tirelessly to put together the show. For those that are exhibiting we wish
you a successful show, and for those attending we look forward to catching up with you!
And, good luck to all the nominees of the INCLEAN Innovation Awards!
See you there!
