The Caprice difference
Australian Owned and Manufactured
By Phil Mathot*
As owner/operator of a carpet cleaning business
there are several things that I have found to
be incredibly beneficial. Formal training and
education, on-the-job experience and having
older experienced mentors are a given; but
networking with others in the industry can
be more valuable than ever expected. And
this is something the internet facilitates really
effectively, if you know where to look.
Several years ago through good luck rather than good planning I
was fortunate enough to meet Frank Devine – an experienced senior
member of the carpet and rug cleaning industry.
Frank introduced me to the Australian Carpet Cleaning Forums
(www.australianforums.biz), and my education and business were
given a substantial and much needed boost.
Although I was initially reluctant to participate and converse with
the other members, as time went on I learned to use the archives to
search for answers to some of my questions, and began to participate
in the discussions. The Australian Carpet Cleaning Forums are
perhaps the best technical repository available to the Australian carpet
cleaner, with a wealth of information available. It is also moderated by
an incredibly adept team.
In more recent times, the Australian Carpet Cleaners Page – a
Facebook group comprising of carpet cleaners, restorers, industry
suppliers and experts – was created by James Bethel. Although this
medium does not have the capacity to archive dialogue, the ease of
participation (via mobile phone app) and large user base (about 400
people), has provided an opportunity for members of the industry to
receive rapid responses to posts.
In fact it is not uncommon for a cleaner to make a post while
oniste from a mobile phone, accompanied with a picture, and have
assistance within minutes from other participating members. Dialogue
with some of the best trainers and technical minds in this industry
including Col Nation (Abbsolve), Jenny Boymal (Jena Dyco) and
Franco Preo (Fresh Air Carpet Cleaning) is available on both the
Australian Carpet Cleaners Page on Facebook, and the Individual
Cleaners Association of Australia and New Zealand (ICAN) forums.
And technical assistance isn’t the only topic of discussion. Marketing,
sales, dealing with problematic situations and customers, equipment
and chemical reviews, productivity enhancements, insurance and
other service providers are all topics of discussion and debate.
In addition to this, these mediums have provided an opportunity for
collaboration between different parties where additional manpower
and other resources have been required, particularly in restoration.
I’ve heard the question raised as to why anybody would be prepared to
participate and share infor mation when a competitor could be a member.
While most of us would not openly share trade secrets, the general
consensus is that the benefits of collaboration outweigh the negatives.
Two businesses covering a similar service area that develop a level of
trust can recommend the other during periods of high demand, rely
on the other for assistance during breakdowns, and can grow business
It is also worth noting that some of the best advice and information is
acquired through the networking that these mediums facilitate behind
the scenes – so the ‘lurkers’ and non-participants actually miss out.
If you haven’t heard of these sites, or haven’t yet had an opportunity
to be involved in any online networking, I’d encourage you to get
online and get involved.
