Cornish has been working in the cleaning industry for 30 years
starting with Berkley Challenge which then became Spotless. She
joined Quad Services five years ago and is site manager for Port
Waratah Coal Services at both the Carrington and Kooragang sites
Working under two long-time colleagues and friends, Quad’s
operations manager Jacquie Blanch and group general manager
Dobrilla Cutler, the three ladies have worked together and cleaned
together, on and off for 25 years and from their achievements,
obviously make a dependable and productive team.
Cornish is shy when asked about her achievements but admits that
it comes down to personal pride in her work. “I like my job and that
makes it easy to do it well,” she shared. “It’s also easy to work for
Quad as it’s a great company, and I have the added bonus of being
able to work with some life-long friends.”
Cornish manages a team of cleaners whom she trains onsite utilising
her years of experience, which has evolved to adopt modern cleaning
methods. “Having started out many years ago there are many old-
school cleaning methods of which I’ve had to let go,” Cornish admitted,
“but being able to move with the times and improve processes with new
technology and methods is the only way to move forward.”
Cornish tries to instil this open-minded approach to learning in all
of her cleaners; who she considers friends as well as colleagues.
Dobrilla Cutler has nominated Cornish for this award for the last
four years and it came about from Cornish’s worth ethic.
“When we could see that Daphne was improving the high standard
of work and developing and maintaining the relationship with the
client, we used the excellence award nomination as a way of showing
her our gratitude for her hard work,” Cutler continued. “It started
out as a sign of appreciation, but low and behold she won – and kept
winning every year we nominated her.”
On Cutler’s part, it showed good judgement and she credits it to
Daphne’s experience, wisdom and work ethic. “We’ve all been in
the industry for the same time and were all about the same age, and
it’s difficult these days to find people who don’t mind doing the hard
yards, so it’s in high demand and should be appreciated.
“Daphne is a pleasure to work with; we don’t need to check her
work, she’s reliable, she conducts all our training, trouble shooting, site
inspections, and has built great rapport with the client,” shared Cutler.
“Quad has been awarded this contract again for the next three years
and a big reason for that is because of Daphne’s management, which
is another testament to her work.
“There are so many cleaning companies in this industry to choose
from but if a client has the utmost trust and faith in their service
provider, that cements the relationship and they have trust that the
high standard of service will be maintained,” noted Cutler. “And
that’s the relationship our client has with Daphne.”
With Cutler’s glowing praise, it seems apparent why Cornish has
been the award recipient for the past four years. “I’m so privileged
and honoured to receive these awards, I’ve never received anything
like this before and I’m really appreciative to Quad and Dobrilla for
thinking me worthy of nomination,” Cornish blushed.
The only thing that could make it better would be if it happened
again next year, making it five years running. “There’s always a chance
that someone could be better, so I don’t get complacent,” Cornish
admitted. “I actually feel a bit nervous now – the pressure is on!”
Quad Services’ chief executive Andrew Yardley also commented on
Cornish’s successive achievements. “Daphne encapsulates everything
we look for in an employee at Quad. She is hard working but also
very focused on ensuring our client is happy with the service the
team provide,” he stated. “To win this award four years in a row is a
tremendous result and one that Daphne thoroughly deserves.”
Quad’s Cornish wins excellence award, again!
Quad Services’ site manager, Daphne Cor nish, won the 2014 Building Services Contractors Association of Australia’s
(BSCAA) excellence award for maintenance of an industrial site. But when INCLEAN discovered she had received the same
accolade four years running, it was time to shine the spotlight on this over-achiever. Here, Cor nish speaks with editor, Kim Taranto.
